Ying Ying fired up for Sindhu clash

BUKIT JALILA: Lee Ying Ying believes she can give Rio Olympic runner-up PV Sindhu a tough fight in the second round of the Malaysia Open on Thursday.

The 20-year-old checked into her maiden Malaysia Open second round with a 21-14, 19-21, 21-7 win over Taiwan's Chiang Ying Li at the Axiata Arena on Wednesday.

"I am happy with my performance today (Wednesday). I am currently in the process of slowly changing my game plan.

"It was a bit of a struggle for me, as I couldn't adapt well, and as a result did not do well in training. It was only until a couple of days back that I managed to find that feeling.

"Previously, my style was very much focused on defending, but I'm slowly adding in more attacking shots," said the World No 39.

On facing Sindhu in the second round, the 2015 world junior runner-up, added: "This will be my first time playing her and I know it's going to be very tough. She's very tall and her shots are powerful.

"I will have to focus on my defence and try to catch her on the counter attacks."

Also playing in the second round is national No 1 Goh Jin Wei, who plays South Korea's Sung Ji Hyun.

It was, however, the end of the road for Soniia Cheah who was outclassed 21-10, 21-9 by World No 1 Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan in the first round.

The other Malaysian casualties on Wednesday were women's doubles Goh Yea Ching-Tee Jing Yi and Lim Jee Lynn-Yap Zhen.

Independent shuttler Liew Daren also fell short in his bid to win his men’s singles first round match, losing 21-18, 21-17 to Indonesia's Jonatan Christie.
