Chong Wei surprises fans with early comeback

KUALA LUMPUR: Lee Chong Wei, who is recovering from nose cancer, served a surprise by turning up at Bukit Kiara yesterday to do physical training.

Many fans had thought that the three-time Olympic silver medallist would only resume training next Monday but he started earlier than expected.

Chong Wei did gym work under the supervision of his trainer and coaches Misbun Sidek and Hendrawan.

It was back to familiar ground for the former World No 1, as the BAM Academy, is a place he fondly calls his second home.

After a two-hour workout, the 36-year-old looked relaxed and jovial.

“It was wonderful (training) but at the same time I felt jittery and nervous,” admitted Chong Wei.

“It was a tough and gruelling session but at the end of the day it was enjoyable.

“I went through the normal routine of stretching and moving on the equipment.”

Chong Wei added that he is looking forward to hitting the courts next Monday.

“This is just a small step towards my comeback and one positive thing is I did not at all feel tired.

“It will take time to build up my fitness level but I am optimistic of my recovery.

“Yes, the road is long and hard but I believe that I am in the prayers of Malaysians and that is great motivation for me.

“But let’s take it one day at a time as I try to regain my form and fitness.

“God willing, I hope to start competing internationally when I am better, physically I mean.

“Mentally, I am as ready as ever. I thank my coaches, doctors and BAM for their continued support,” said Chong Wei who is expected to participate in the All England next March.
