Peng Soon-Liu Ying still stuck on old ways

KUALA LUMPUR: Although Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying are now a professional mixed doubles pair, the World No 6 are still very much a product of the BA of Malaysia (BAM).

Having quit the BAM last year, the duo said they are trying their best to keep to their old ways as if they were still part of the national team.

The Malaysian pair touched on this after reaching the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Masters on Thursday.

Third seeds Peng Soon-Liu Ying face 11th-ranked compatriots Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai for a semi-final spot on Friday following a 17-21, 21-17, 21-15 win over China’s Lu Kai-Chen Lu.

Soon Huat-Shevon, who are seeded fifth, booked their spot by ousting Japan's Takuro Hoki-Wakana Nagahara 21-13, 21-19.

"We left BAM just over two weeks ago and must admit that we are still following their ways," said Peng Soon.

"Of course, we do not have the service of a full time coach yet but we are thankful to have Chew Choon Eng (former international) assist us in the last two matches," added Peng Soon.

However, it is learnt that Choon Eng won't be around for the last eight clash as he will be away on personal matters.

Liu Ying, believes she and Peng Soon have been doing all they can to emulate the strict regime practiced by their former peers under the national body.

"We still try to train like we did in BAM, we try our best, so hopefully we get to put up a good show tomorrow. We know each other's game too well.

"Regardless of the outcome tomorrow, Malaysia are secured of a semi-final spot and that's what matters most," said Liu Ying.

The last time the two pairs met in a competitive match was at the Indonesia Open last year, which Peng Soon-Liu Ying won 21-19, 21-19.

Malaysia's interest in the women's doubles event ended in the second round when Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen lost 21-9, 21-18 to Indonesia's Yulfira Barkah-Jauza Fadhila Sugiarto.
