Chong King the next Chong Wei?

WHILE he was pleased to see both his charges, Soong Joo Ven and Cheam June Wei reach the final of the Malaysia International Series on Sunday, national men's singles coach Misbun Sidek was particularly impressed with the performance of Lim Chong King.

Although the 19-year-old failed to get past the semi-finals, it was good enough for Misbun to compare him to Lee Chong Wei, who recently announced his retirement from the sport.

“This young boy has got potential and I foresee him having a very bright future.

“His jumping smashes are definitely an advantage and he is also a very stubborn player on court.

“He reminds me of a young Chong Wei.

“Chong King not only has good physique, but great senses on court and is willing to go the extra mile during training,” said Misbun yesterday.

According to the former international, a player like Chong King can be moulded into a star.

“Chong King is a very hardworking player.

“If he maintains this kind of attitude and performance until the end of the year, I see him being one of Malaysia’s top players in the future,” added Misbun.

Chong King, who was only promoted to the senior squad in January, lost 21-13, 21-15 to Joo Ven in the last four on Saturday.

Two other 19-year-olds in the national men's singles setup are Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin and Ng Tze Yong.

Misbun was also happy with the performance of most of his charges as they had met his expectations in Ipoh.

“My target was to see an all Malaysian semi-finals, and that materialised.

“Players like Joo Ven and June Wei were expected to be in the final.

“My only hope is for them to maintain this consistency,” Misbun said.
