Ee Yi-Yew Sin set up quarter-final showdown with Aaron Chia-Wooi Yik

IT has been a fabulous two weeks for men’s doubles Teo Ee Yi-Ong Yew Sin since being dropped by the BA of Malaysia from the national squad.

The World No 23 upset the form book to reach last week’s Malaysia Masters quarter-finals, and yesterday, they made the last eight of the Indonesia Masters in Jakarta.

The unseeded pair defeated Germany’s Jonas Ralfy Jansen-Peter Kaesbauer 21-17, 21-12 in the second round to set up a cracking quarter-final clash against compatriots Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik today.

“Since we have matched our performance at the Malaysia Masters, we now hope to fight on and do better here,” said Ee Yi in Jakarta yesterday.

Aaron-Wooi Yik produced an excellent performance to overcome Denmark’s Mathias Boe-Mads Condrad Petersen 21-15, 21-13.

It would be an interesting battle today with Aaron-Wooi Yik hoping to go far after they slipped a spot to World No 9 recently.

As for Ee Yi-Yew Sin, they would be determined to prove a point after being axed from the national team.

Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin also reached the last eight with a 21-14, 21-18 win over China’s Di Zi Jian-Wang Chang in their second-round match.

In the mixed doubles, 2016 Olympics silver medallists Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying advanced to the last eight after beating Taiwan’s Lee Jhe Huei-Hsu Ya Ching 21-15, 21-17 in the second round.

Peng Soon-Liu Ying, who reached the semi-finals at the Malaysia Masters, take one top seeds Zheng Si Wei-Huang Ya Qiong of China today.

Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing also put up a sterling performance to secure a place in the last eight by overcoming Indonesia’s Alfian Eko Prasetyo-Annisa Saufika 21-13, 21-11.

The Malaysians play Ko Sung Hyun-Eom Hye Won of South Korea today.

It was, however, the end of the road for Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai when they lost 21-15, 21-14 to South Korea’s Ko Sung Hyun-Eom Hye Won yesterday.
