Test awaits Kian Meng-Pei Jing in Jakarta

MIXED doubles Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing were at their unpredictable best as they stormed into the semi-finals of the Indonesia Masters in Jakarta yesterday.

Kian Meng-Pei Jing, who lost in the first round of last week’s Malaysia Masters, are the last Malaysian mixed doubles pair standing in Jakarta.

The World No 14 outplayed South Korea’s Ko Sung Hyun-Eom Hye Won 21-7, 21-18 in just 34 minutes in their quarter-final match.

The Malaysians will have a mountain to climb today when they take on World No 1 Zheng Si Wei-Huang Ya Qiong of China, who defeated Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying 21-14, 21-13, for a place in the final today.

Kian Meng-Pei Jing have lost all four meetings against the China pair last year.

‘We are happy to be in the semi-finals. We had a great match today (yesterday) against the Korean pair. There was no pressure and we played better than them,’ said Kian Meng.‘The China pair are the favourites but we’ll give them a good fight.’

In men’s doubles, the quarter-final match between Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Teo Ee Yi-Ong Yew Sin turned out to be a tight affair, with the former winning 28-26, 21-19 in 40 minutes to advance to the semi-finals.

They will face top seeds Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, who defeated Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin 21-13, 23-21.
