BAM keep four places open for outsiders

BAM will stick to their list of 16 players and six coaches in badminton's return to the courts on June 1 although 20 players are allowed to train under the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO).

BAM have identified the group of players to come under their coaching director Wong Choong Hann. Five other coaches will oversee the daily training.

The remaining four slots are likely to be offered by BAM to two independent pairs.

Expected to get the BAM invite are men's doubles Teo Ee Yi-Ong Yew Sin and mixed doubles Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying.

If things go to plan, they should be joining training in mid-July for the Thomas Cup and Tokyo Olympics.

The coaches who will begin their duties on June 1 under BAM's restructured training programme are Hendrawan (men's singles), Indra Wijaya (women's singles), Hoon Thien How (men's doubles), Rosman Razak (women's doubles) and Paulus Firman (mixed doubles).

BAM are allowed to have a maximum of 56 people, including administrative staff, players, coaches, support services team, NSC and National Sports Institute (NSI) officials at the ABM during CMCO.

"We will stick to the 16 players and there will be six coaches, including me for training from June 1. We are not looking at increasing the number at the moment," said Choong Hann yesterday.

"We have to strictly follow the SOP to ensure the players are safe from Covid-19. The current number of players and coaches are adequate.

"The inclusion of new coaches will be done in phases and they will take charge of their respective players later.

"The current arrangement looks good for a smooth start where the players under the Road to Tokyo programme can start early."

The shuttlers called up for training are Lee Zii Jia, Cheam June Wei (men's singles), Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani (men's doubles), Soniia Cheah, S. Kisona (women's singles), Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean, Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen (women's doubles) and mixed pairs Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie and tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing.

The new coaches who will be joining BAM are Indonesian Flandy Limpele and former national doubles player Chan Chong Ming. Flandy will head the men's doubles while Chong Ming will take charge of the women's doubles.
