BWF giving BAM the jitters

THE BA of Malaysia (BAM) believe there will be some cause for concern with the Badminton World Federation's (BWF) safety protocols for the restart of tournaments.

The BWF released their safety protocols on Friday to bring back international badminton.

And despite the Covid-19 situation showing no signs of slowing down, badminton is set to return with the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals in Aarhus, Denmark on Oct 3-11.

According to one of BWF's protocols, participating teams do not need to undergo a quarantine period upon arrival in Denmark.

BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh, however, stressed that the BWF have given assurance that all precautions will be taken.

"To be honest, it is an issue either way. If a 14-day quarantine period were to be implemented, then no team would want to participate," said Kenny.

"There will certainly be a cause for concern from some parties, but we've had the briefing with the BWF and they've given us an informative and expansive breakdown of how things would be done.

"They have assured us that all safety precautions will be taken and testing will be done on-site.

"Of course, no one can guarantee anything in today's timeline, but it's the best we can go with."

Kenny added that the BAM have yet to decide whether they will stay on in Denmark to participate in the European legs of the BWF Tour.

The BWF have scheduled Super 750's Denmark Open I (Oct 13-18) and Denmark Open II (Oct 20-25) after the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals.

"We will decide once the BWF release more details on the unfreezing of world rankings.

"Since they are Super 750 events, not all of our players will be able to qualify."
