Myisha tops group, gets chance to take on seniors

IT was a high-flying day for Myisha Khairul as she upset proceedings to top the girls' singles Group A category of the National Junior Ranking Challenge at the Academy Badminton Malaysia in Bukit Kiara yesterday.

Having beaten Tan Zhing Yi in her opening match on Monday, Myisha, 18, picked up where she left with a 21-15, 21-19 win over Joanne Ng in the morning session.

The Johor-born saved her best for the evening session as she downed top seed Khor Jing Wen 21-18, 22-24, 24-22.

"I had a slight advantage as Jing Wen was stretched to three games in the morning," said Myisha.

"When she showed signs of fatigue during our match, it offered me more confidence to get the points.

"It's great to top the group as it is my last year as a junior."

Zhing Yi, 17, took the runner-up spot after wins over Jing Wen and Joanne to finish with a 2-1 record.

Both Myisha and Zhing Yi will now have a chance to take on the senior shuttlers in the playoff challenge on Nov 3-6.

In the boys' singles Group A, 17-year-old Ong Zhen Yi is still unbeaten following two more wins yesterday to take his record to 4-0.

Zhen Yi recorded victories over Chua Kim Sheng (21-14, 21-17) and V. Poopathi (21-11, 21-13).

"I hope to finish in the top three as I want to challenge the seniors," said Zhen Yi.

Zhen Yi leads the 10-player standings while 17-year-old Justin Hoh, top seed Jacky Kok and overnight leader Ong Ken Yon all trail with a 3-1 record.

The top three players from Group A will go on to face three senior back-up shuttlers.
