No bright start for Mei Kuan-Meng Yean at Tokyo Olympics

KUALA LUMPUR: National women's doubles Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean will have their work cut out for them if they want to reach the knockout stage of the Tokyo Olympics.

This comes after the World No 11 went down 21-14, 21-17 to World No 6 Greysia Polli-Apriyani Rahayu of Indonesia in the opening Group A tie on Saturday.

Mei Kuan-Meng Yean will now have to hope for a miracle to upset World No 1 Sayaka Hirota-Yuki Fukushima of Japan on Sunday.

Also in Group A are Britain's Chloe Birch-Lauren Smith.

For the doubles event, only the top-two pairs from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals.
