Dynamic duo achieve BAM's target

BAM coaching director Wong Choong Hann heaped praises on Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik for bagging the Tokyo Olympics men's doubles bronze medal on Saturday.

He said credit must be given to World No 9 Aaron-Wooi Yik who outdid themselves to bring Olympic glory to the nation.

"We came here (Tokyo) as a team, and worked towards one goal and that was to win a medal for Malaysia," said Choong Hann yesterday.

"We had multiple channels, but we knew that our chances were higher in the men's singles (Lee Zii Jia), men's doubles and mixed doubles (Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying), so we gave our best in these three disciplines.

"At the end, the men's doubles achieved the target.

"It's considered a success for all, but surely greater for Aaron-Wooi Yik and for the nation."

Choong Hann was quick to point out that the medal in Tokyo should inspire the pair to achieve greater heights.

"Yes, they did well to secure the bronze, but this is not the final destination. It is a milestone to even more greater success.

"In sight of the 2024 Paris Olympics, we will work hard to realign our target and what we need to do moving forward in the coming three years."

Five years ago in Rio, Malaysia came home with three silver medals from badminton through former World No 1 Lee Chong Wei, men's doubles Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, and Peng Soon-Liu Ying.
