BAM announce shuttlers for Thomas, Uber, Sudirman Cups

BAM's new approach was confirmed yesterday when they announced a "young" squad for the Thomas, Uber and Sudirman Cups.

In recent days, the national association had indicated their intention to send a young squad to the Sudirman Cup in Vantaa, Finland (Sept 26-Oct 3), the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals in Aarhus, Denmark (Oct 9-17).

The core of the squads is mostly made up of shuttlers making their debuts in the team events with the average age no more than 23.

However, there are no major surprises with All-England champion Lee Zii Jia and Olympic bronze medallists Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik among the experienced players selected.

For the Sudirman Cup, Zii Jia will skipper the team while the men's shuttlers include Ng Tze Yong, Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin (singles), Aaron-Wooi Yik, Man Wei Chung-Tee Kai Wun (doubles).

The other members of the team are S. Kisona, Eoon Qi Xuan, K. Letshanaa (women's singles), M. Thinaah-Pearly Tan, Yap Ling-Teoh Mei Xing (women's doubles), Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See and Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei (mixed doubles).

For the Thomas Cup, the singles shuttlers are Zii Jia, Tze Yong, Aidil, Cheam June Wei and Leong Jun Hao while the men's pairs are Aaron-Wooi Yik, Wei Chong-Kai Wun, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzudidin Rumsani and Low Hang Yee.

It will be a huge opportunity for Tze Yong and Aidil, both 21, who impressed during BAM's internal ranking competition last week.

Tze Yong came out tops in the five-day ranking meet, winning all his five matches while Aidil finished second.

For the Uber Cup, Sea Games gold medallist S. Kisona leads the women's singles, followed by Goh Jin Wei, Qi Xuan, Letshanaa and Siti Nurshuhaini Azman.

The doubles pairs comprise captain Lee Meng Yean, Thinaah-Pearly, Yap Ling-Mei Xing and Go Pei Kee.

Apart from Kisona, Jin Wei and Meng Yean, the rest of the 11-member squad will be making their Uber Cup Finals debuts.

"The target for us is to at least reach the quarter-finals in all three competitions," said BAM president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria yesterday.

"But what is more important is that this is an opportunity for us to expose a young squad in preparation for the Paris Olympics in 2024.

"This is the time to take the risk and we are taking measures to have a formidable squad by 2024.

"Even though this is a young squad, the likes of Aaron-Wooi Yik have proved that despite their age, they can beat the top two pairs in the world.

"We definitely need to see the same fearless spirit among the young players, to show that they have nothing to lose and are eager to show that they can step up at a senior level."
