Choong Hann: Well-balanced plan is vital

BA of Malaysia (BAM) coaching director Wong Choong Hann yesterday reiterated the importance of proper rotation for players as far as tournaments are concerned.

According to the former international, fast tracking up-and-coming shuttlers lies in the execution of a well-balanced plan.

Earlier this week, BAM named young squads for the Sudirman Cup in Vantaa, Finland (Sep 26-Oct 3), and the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals in Aarhus, Denmark (Oct 9-17).

Still, many wondered as to why players like Yap Roy King, Valeree Siow and Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Haikal Nazri, who all did well recently in Europe, were left out of the squads.

"I think it is important to note that apart from equal tournament opportunities, other factors such as Covid-19 related challenges and sufficient training time are also important.

"There must be a well-balanced plan.

"I would rather have them play more competitive tournaments to build up their confidence for the Super 100 and 300 events next season before they go to the team events.

"They may miss this year's Sudirman Cup, Thomas and Uber Cups, but without them realising it, they will be the key players for the following editions," said Choong Hann.

Choong Hann said having them for the team events would do them no good in terms of ranking points as they have not played in many tournaments this year.

"For the Thomas and Uber Cups, points will be based on the average number of tournaments the players had played last season.

"Players like Roy King, Valeree, Wan Arif and Haikal, did not play in any (senior) tournaments last season, so they are not going to get anything.

"These are very important factors to be considered," Choong Hann added.

Roy King-Valeree, who won three straight titles in Latvia, Greece and Ukraine recently, along with Wan Arif-Haikal, who took two titles, are in quarantine and will resume training at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara soon.

Their next assignments are the back-to-back tournaments in Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
