Malaysia thrash Egypt to qualify for Sudirman Cup quarter-finals

KUALA LUMPUR: As expected, it was a stroll in the park for Malaysia who scored an easy 5-0 win over Egypt in the second Group D tie of the Sudirman Cup on Tuesday.

The victory confirms Malaysia's spot in the quarter-finals, with one more group tie remaining on Thursday against Japan.

Following a close 3-2 win in the opening tie against England on Monday, the BA of Malaysia (BAM) rested their key players and went with their second stringers for the match against minnows Egypt at the Energia Areena in Vantaa, Finland.

In the opening mixed doubles match, Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei raced to a 21-6, 21-7 win over Ahmed Salah-Nour Ahmed Youssri in just 20 minutes.

Malaysia then made it 2-0 through Polish Open champion Ng Tze Yong, who thrashed Mohamaed Mostafa Kamel 21-8, 21-2 in the men's singles match.

"I was a little nervous because this is my first major event. However, there wasn't much pressure on me so I was able to play my game.

"I'm happy to be able to contribute a point for my team," said Tze Yong, who is being groomed for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Women's singles Eoon Qi Xuan sealed the tie for Malaysia when she made easy work of Doha Hany in straight games 21-5, 21-7.

Like Tze Yong, the 20-year-old was just happy to have the opportunity to take to court at a major event.

"There was no pressure, so it was enjoyable to be on court. I am happy and grateful to be given a chance to play," said the Perak-born Qi Xuan.

Despite the tie already having been secured, men's doubles Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun did not go easy on Mostafa Kamel-Salah, as they too thumped their opponents 21-7, 21-6 in just 19 minutes.

It was a perfect day at the office for Malaysia, when women's doubles Teoh Mei Xing-Yap Ling wrapped up proceedings with another easy 21-4, 21-9 win over Nour-Doha.

Malaysia will play Japan next to determine who tops the group before a fresh draw is conducted for the quarter-finals.

Malaysia's best achievement at the world mixed team championship was reaching the semi-finals of the 2009 edition in Guangzhou, China.
