Malaysia suffer third defeat in Uber Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: The national women's badminton team ended their Uber Cup campaign with a lot of lessons learnt, but without a win after falling to a 4-1 defeat to Canada this morning.

The youthful and inexperienced Malaysians had hoped to at least get a consolation point after a 4-1 defeat to Denmark and a 5-0 whitewash by China in Group D.

But they got off to a woeful start as the underperforming S. Kisona once again couldn't deliver in the first singles at the Ceres Arena in Aarhus, Denmark.

The world No 53 looked a pale shadow of her self as she fell to a 9-21, 14-21 defeat to world No 183 Talia Ng.

Teoh Mei Xing-Yap Ling, playing in the first doubles, then blew a good start as they lost 21-13, 10-21, 14-21 to Rachel Honderich-Kristen Tsai.

World No 123 Eoon Qi Xuan, who scored an upset win over Denmark's world No 23 Line Christophersen on Saturday, was then tasked with keeping Malaysia's hopes alive.

But this time, the 20-year-old couldn't deliver as she went down 12-21, 13-21 to 17-year-old Rachel Chan.

However, Go Pei Kee-M. Thinaah brought a point back for the team by beating Catherine Choi-Crystal Lai 21-12, 21-13 in the second doubles tie.

But it was the Canadians who finished stronger with Zhang Wen Yu coming from a game down to beat K. Letshanaa 17-21, 21-16, 21-12 in the third singles.

It was certainly a sad ending for the young Malaysian team who clearly still have a long way to go.

Malaysia, thus, failed to repeat their feat in 2018 in Bangkok, where the women's team reached the last eight.

Meanwhile, defending champions Japan stayed on track by crushing Germany 5-0 in Group A. The Japanese will meet Indonesia tomorrow to decide the group winners.
