Back in the groove

MIXED doubles pair Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See are back in business at the Indonesian Masters in Bali after a lukewarm show in Europe.

The world No 25 were in fine form as they clinched a convincing 21-14, 21-19 win over Germany's Jones Ralfy Jansen-Linda Elfer in the second round yesterday.

It was a much needed boost for Pang Ron-Yee See, who had struggled for consistency in their last three tournaments in Europe.

The pair have been thrust into the spotlight after senior pairs Tan Kian Meng-lai Pei Jing and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie were dropped from the BAM stable earlier this year.

But after a strong showing at the Sudirman Cup where they beat Indonesia's world No 5 Praveen Jordan-Melati Daeva Oktavianti, Pang Ron-Yee See were ousted in the early rounds of the Denmark Open, French Open and Hylo Open.

This is only the second time Pang Ron-Yee See have reached the quarter-finals of a BWF World Tour event and they will be looking to emulate their feat at the Thailand Open in January in which they finished as semi-finalists.

The pair however have a tough challenge awaiting as they meet top seeds and world No 2 Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai in the last eight.

The Thais were made to slog before beating Malaysia's Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei 21-17, 16-21, 21-17.

"Today's match was definitely tougher than it seemed because we are not quite at the standard of a top pair," admitted Pang Ron.

"But we came into this tournament as underdogs and we had less pressure so that really did help us.

"I think we've learned a lot from our Europe experience and we are more mature going forward although there is still a lot of room for improvement."

Meanwhile independent pair Soon Huat-Shevon's campaign ended in the second round after losing 21-15, 7-21, 20-22 to eighth seeds Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet of Hong Kong.

In women's doubles, the exciting pairing of Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah also checked into the last eight by ousting home pair Fitriani Fitriani-Yulia Yosephine Susanto 21-8, 21-14.

"I think we did better than the first round as we made a lot fewer mistakes today. We were just really focused on winning every point," said Pearly.

The world No 18 meet Japan's world No 9 Nami Matsuyama-Chiharu Shida in the last eight.

There will also be three men's pairs in the quarter-finals as Olympic bronze medallists Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi all cleared their second round matches.
