Duo marred by inconsistency

Men's doubles Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik have what it takes to be a world beater despite their current struggles.

Due to their yo-yo form, the Olympic bronze medallists have not been able to stamp their mark on the international circuit.

That is worrying for the BAM, and they will have to fix it before next month's World Championships.

World No 6 Aaron-Wooi Yik showed glimpses of their ability by reaching the semi-finals of the French Open and the Indonesia Masters.

They also showed that they have the ability to beat some of world's best, as evident by their win over Taiwanese Olympic gold medallists Lee Yang-Wang Chi Lin at the Indonesia Masters.

But yet, the duo have also shown that they have the tendency to fall flat against lower-ranked opponents. And they also tend to struggle against fellow Malaysians.

Their surprise defeat to compatriots Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi in the second round of the Indonesian Open on Thursday raised eyebrows.

And it was a costly defeat, one that cost them a place in the BWF World Tour Finals, as Aaron-Wooi Yik did not have enough points to qualify.

"Consistency is definitely an issue for Aaron-Wooi Yik even though they have come a long way to be among the world's best," said BAM coaching director Wong Choong Hann yesterday.

"Right now it is for them to stay consistent throughout multiple tournaments, and there is an obvious pattern where they tend to drop off a little.

"Against Yew Sin-Ee Yi, it was probably a bit more of psychological issue as they have always been Aaron-Wooi Yik's seniors.

"It is something that we need to solve and we know that this is something that can be improved upon.

"To be among the best, they have to beat not only the best, but also to be beating everyone regardless of ranking.

"On their day they can certainly deliver but they need to stay calm and focus. It's something we need to address going forward instead of sweeping it aside."

Whilst out of the running for the World Tour Finals, Aaron-Wooi Yik still have a shot a the World Championships in Huelva, Spain from Dec 12-19.

And with Indonesian great Rexy Mainaky returning to the national fold as assistant coaching director next month, there will be heightened expectations for Aaron-Wooi Yik to work on their weaknesses and stand among the best.
