Clarity needed in players' contracts

Sports analyst Dr Pekan Ramli believes the BA of Malaysia (BAM) should come out with comprehensive player contracts to avoid another Lee Zii Jia episode.

Pekan said tighter contracts would protect BAM from losing their players easily and safeguard them from criticism in the future.

Zii Jia was banned for two years from competing in international competitions by BAM for resigning from the national team.

However, the suspension was dropped following a meeting between the world No 7 and BAM Tan Sri Norza Zakaria on Monday.

"At the moment, we do not know about the details of the contract between Zii Jia and BAM as it was never revealed to the public," said Pekan yesterday.

"BAM should come up with contracts which legally binds the players in some way for the future and make this clear to the public to avoid being criticised if such things happen again.

"These kinds of contracts are the norm in other sports. For example, in football, clubs are compensated when a player who they have developed joins another team.

"Even students on government scholarships have to serve a certain period of time (bond) with the government upon graduation.

"They can leave (before the bond expires) but will have to pay a certain amount of compensation.

"Zii Jia's departure would have been a big loss for BAM as he is just coming into his prime years.

"Previously, they had let players who were approaching the end of their careers go (to turn pro) without any issues."

Pekan added that while the views of the fans must be taken into account, BAM should also be respected as they are the custodians of the sport in Malaysia and were the ones who groomed players such as Zii Jia into what they are today.

The national body had received intense criticism from the public as well as the international badminton fraternity after announcing their decision to ban Zii Jia.
