KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 11 Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah scored a major upset by ousting two-time champions Mayu Matsumoto-Wakana Nagahara to reach the quarter-finals of the World Championships at Royal Arena, Copenhagen, on Thursday.
Pearly-Thinaah defeated the World No. 4 Japanese pair 21-14, 22-20, and will play China's Zhang Shu Xian-Zheng Yu or Netherlands' Kirsten De Wit-Alyssa Tirtosentono for a place in the semi-finals on Friday.
They are the first Malaysian pair to reach quarter-finals since Amelia Anscelly-Soong Fie Cho in 2015.
