Tired Zii Jia may skip French Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Shuttler Lee Zii Jia has hinted that he might skip this week's Super 750 French Open.

This comes following the 25-year-old's defeat in the final of the Denmark Open on Sunday.

One week after capturing the Super 500 Arctic Open crown in Finland, world No. 11 Zii Jia fell short in his bid to win back-to-back World Tour titles, when he lost 21-12, 21-6 to China's world No. 22 Weng Hong Yang at the Jyske Bank Arena in Odense.

Admitting that it has been hectic the past couple of weeks, Zii Jia, who was also last year's losing finalist, told SpoTV that he will need to make a decision with his team on whether to compete in France or not.

"To be honest, I'm still 50-50 about the French Open because it's getting into the third week, and my body is getting tired.

"I have to discuss with my team to see if I'm fit enough to compete.

"We still have the China and Japan Opens coming up, two big tournaments, so we have to make a wise decision," said Zii Jia, who is scheduled to face Hong Yang again in the opening round at the Glaz Arena in Cesson-Sevigne.

On his defeat against Hong Yang, his third in four meetings, Zii Jia added: "He played his best, I got nothing to say because he won the match. He was fantastic.

"I tried to overcome it but he was very consistent and played a very good game today (Sunday).

"I want to throw away all the negative and keep the positives.

"The positive is I'm beginning to feel confident in my game play and I'm trying to work on it.

"I have to be consistent that's my target."

Should Zii Jia decide to skip the French Open, Malaysia's sole interests in the men's singles event will fall on world No 17 Ng Tze Yong.

Tze Yong, who lost to Zii Jia in the Arctic Open final, has been drawn to face India's Priyanshu Rajawat in the first round.
