Rexy expected better results from Aaron-Wooi Yik, Tang Jie-Ee Wei at World Tour Finals

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite failing to advance beyond the group stage of the World Tour Finals in Hangzhou, there will be no changes to the tournament calendar for Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik (men's doubles) and Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei (mixed doubles) next year.

World No. 3 Aaron-Wooi Yik finished last in Group A without a single win, while Tang Jie-Ee Wei secured one win but finished at the bottom of their group.

BA of Malaysia (BAM) coaching director Rexy Mainaky said he expected better results from both pairs.

However, he has no plans to modify their current tournament schedule.

"It's a real pity because Aaron-Wooi Yik could have performed better in the first group match (against Japan's Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi). To me, that was the key moment that could

have changed the course of their campaign at the World Tour Finals," said Rexy.

"They started slow, their initiatives were sluggish, and they were too defensive.

"There was no quick change of play from defensive to offensive smashes. It's sad because I really wanted them to reach at least the semi-finals," said Rexy.

The former world champions have never advanced beyond the group stage of the World Tour Finals in all four outings.

Regarding Tang Jie-Ee Wei, Rexy added, "Tang Jie-Ee Wei's first match (against China's Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping) was very poor. They didn't look like a pair.

"Ee Wei was doing her own thing, and Tang Jie looked lost.

"They picked up eventually in the second and third matches, and it's a pity they couldn't capitalise on their chance when they had it."

Tang Jie-Ee Wei, making their World Tour Finals debut, stunned world No. 2 Yuta Watanabe-Arisa Higashino of Japan in their second group match on Thursday but lost 18-21, 21-18, 21-14 to Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai in the third match and deciding match on Friday.

"Will their poor performance affect their tournament calendar next year? No, not really. For now, we are committed to playing in all the main tournaments until the All England in March.

"If we decide to pick and choose our tournaments, it will be after that," Rexy added.

"The target for Aaron-Wooi Yik is to keep them in the top two, while and top eight for Tang Jie-Ee Wei.

"If Aaron-Wooi Yik can win the Super 1000 Malaysia Open, for example, in January, then perhaps we might adjust their tournament schedule, but for now, we will stick to our original plan," Rexy added.
