Aaron-Wooi Yik receive 7/10 rating for Malaysia Open performance

KUALA LUMPUR: Coach Tan Bin Shen has given men's doubles Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik a rating of seven out of 10 for their overall performance at the Petronas Malaysia Open.

On Friday, the world No. 4 crashed out in the quarter-finals after losing 16-21, 21-18, 21-13 to reigning world champions Kang Min Hyuk-Seo Seung Jae of South Korea at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

According to Bin Shen, simple mistakes from Aaron-Wooi Yik, when they should have been tighter in the second and deciding game, cost them dearly as they squandered a golden opportunity to reach the last four.

"Aaron-Wooi Yik could have played better in this match. The crucial moment was when the Koreans took an 11-10 lead in the deciding interval.

"As soon as they made those minor mistakes, the Koreans became confident. So, this is something that needs attention and improvement.

"If I am to rate their overall performance, I'd say a seven," said Bin Shen.

Aaron-Wooi Yik's defeat extended Malaysia's title drought on home soil since Lee Chong Wei's 2018 men's singles triumph.

However, Bin Shen remains optimistic that Aaron-Wooi Yik will stay on track in their mission to peak at the Paris Olympics in July, despite this setback.

The former world champions are currently No. 4 in the Race to Paris standings with 83,854 points.

Aaron-Wooi Yik will next compete in their second tournament of the season at the Super 750 India Open in New Delhi, starting Tuesday.

The 2023 Denmark Open champions will face Japan's Akira Koga-Taichi Saito in the opening round.
