Tang Jie admits he did not 'protect' his partner enough

KUALA LUMPUR: National mixed doubles ace Chen Tang Jie admitted that he and his partner, Toh Ee Wei, were left ruing the costly errors during a crucial stage, ultimately leading to their missing out on the Thailand Masters title in Bangkok on Sunday.

The world No. 9 battled valiantly from 16-13 down in the second game to draw level at 18-18, but a lack of composure, especially by Tang Jie, paved the way for their Thai opponents Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai to seal a 21-12, 21-18 victory.

The win sent the home crowd at Nimibutr Stadium into a frenzy, marking the first time a local pair had won the event since its inception in 2016.

Tang Jie said he only had himself to blame and took responsibility for the defeat.

Speaking to SNE Sports after the final, Tang Jie said: "In the first game, we couldn't find the opportunity to go on the offensive, resulting in us losing easily. We did better in the second, but my mistakes in the attacking position cost us several crucial points towards the end; that's something I find hard to accept."

In a separate interview with SPOTV, Tang Jie believes he could have also done better in protecting Ee Wei, who was left vulnerable to offensive moves from the opponents.

"I have to take responsibility for that. I did not protect my partner like our rivals did. On many occasions, she was forced into defensive positions," Tang Jie lamented.

Ee Wei reckoned that Dechapol-Sapsiree's experience and stability gave them the edge in the final. The Thais have been playing together for eight years.

Ee Wei added that she and Tang Jie, who were paired up only 14 months ago, could learn a thing or two from the 2021 world champions and winners of 18 World Tour-level titles.

"We definitely have to learn how to be more calm and collected to win points at crucial moments," said Ee Wei.

"This is what sets them apart. With the experience they have had, they're better in terms of decision-making."
