Malaysia face Denmark in the Thomas Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia should qualify with ease for the quarter-finals of the Thomas Cup Finals in Chengdu, China April 28-May 5.

In the draw ceremony in the host city on Friday, Malaysia were drawn in Group C with Denmark, Hong Kong and Algeria.

The top two group finishers will advance to the knockout stage where a fresh draw will be conducted.

Malaysia and Denmark are expected to dominate the group, with Hong Kong, who are coached by former national coaching director Wong Choong Hann, being the dark horse.

Malaysia last tasted Thomas Cup success in 1992, their fifth title, when it was staged in Kuala Lumpur.

At the last edition in Bangkok two years ago, Malaysia were sent packing in the last eight following a 3-2 defeat to India, who went on to emerge as surprise champions.

The last time Malaysia made it to the semi-finals was in 2016.

For the Uber Cup, Malaysia are in Group B with Thailand, Taiwan and Australia.

Despite avoiding China, Japan, and South Korea, it remains to be seen if the national women's team will mount a strong challenge.

For the record, Malaysia last cleared the group stage in 2010.
