KUALA LUMPUR: The highly anticipated match between Lee Zii Jia and Viktor Axelsen at the Thomas Cup in Chengdu, ended in favour of the Dane on Tuesday.
Axelsen, the reigning Olympic champion and world No. 1, drew first blood for his team in the final Group D tie, with a straight 21-16, 24-22 win.
The victory also saw Axelsen extending his head-to-head record over Zii Jia to 6-3.
The last time both players met was at the Sudirman Cup last year, but the match ended prematurely with Axelsen retiring with a hamstring injury.
For the record, both Denmark and Malaysia have already qualified for the quarter-finals of the Thomas Cup.
