Japan's two-time world champion Momota will be missed

KUALA LUMPUR: Two-time world champion Kento Momota's impending retirement from international badminton is set to leave a void in the sport.

Momota confirmed that he will focus on club-level competitions in Japan after the ongoing Thomas Cup, which ends on Sunday in Chengdu, China.

Several top shuttlers, including Indonesia's Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, India's H.S. Prannoy, and Japan's Kodai Naraoka, said Momota's absence from the international scene will be felt.

World No. 7 Anthony said he would treasure all his explosive encounters against the 29-year-old Momota, whom he had beaten only five times in 16 meetings.

"Momota is one of the biggest names in badminton. I will always remember my battles against Momota.

"I think everyone will miss him," said the Indonesian men's singles shuttler.

World No. 9 Prannoy said it was unfortunate to see the former world No. 1 retire early.

The 31-year-old wished Momota good luck but hopes the Japanese star will continue to inspire shuttlers.

"It's sad because he had inspired youngsters in badminton and was their role model.

"He was one of the most consistent players in his heyday. I believe he will help up-and-coming shuttlers in Japan to become world-beaters. Hopefully, we will cross paths again in the circuit," he said.

World No. 2 Naraoka, who looks up to his compatriot, thanked Momota's efforts for turning Japan into a powerhouse in the sport.

Momota's decision to retire comes after a challenging period following a car crash on the Maju Expressway in Malaysia in early 2020.

Despite extensive physical training post-accident, he found it difficult to return to peak form.

In 2019, Momota captured 11 titles, including the world crown in Basel, Switzerland.
