KL halfway to retaining Premier League title

KUALA LUMPUR: Midway through the Malaysian Cricket Premier League, Kuala Lumpur remain on course for a third consecutive title after opening a two-point lead at top of the standings last weekend.

The defending champions followed up a 48-run win over Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in Bangi on Saturday by beating title rivals Armed Forces by six wickets at the Kinrara Oval on Sunday.

The two wins extended KL's unbeaten run in the Premier League and Premier Cup to 24 matches since 2016 as they chase a third straight double triumph.

KL captain Ahmad Faiz Mohammad Noor was pleased with his side's display after claiming four wins from as many matches in the five-team league.

"We are improving with every game and I am happy with how the local and expatriate players are adapting," said Faiz.

"Every player wants to do his best to show his worth to the team.

"The title is far from decided and I can't say we've got it won. We are heading in that direction but we have to remain alert in each game. There is still a lot to play for."

On Sunday, Virandeep Singh took match honours by grabbing four wickets as Forces were all out for 166 runs in 48.1 overs before leading KL home with an unbeaten 32 as the defending champions reached 169-4 in 33.1 overs.

Meanwhile, Selangor completed a double over Penang with a speedy eight-wicket win at the Penang Sports Club in George Town on Sunday after beating the same opponents by nine wickets a day earlier.

Selangor moved up to third on four points, just two points adrift of Forces as they prepare to face KL on Sunday.

Penang remain bottom after a fourth straight loss while UKM are fourth on two points.

FIXTURES - Saturday: Penang v Armed Forces (Penang Sports Club), UKM v Selangor (UKM, Bangi); Sunday: Penang v Armed Forces (Penang Sports Club), Selangor v Kuala Lumpur (Kinrara Oval).
