UPSI honours Azizulhasni with award, scholarship and job offer

KUALA LUMPUR: Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Azizulhasni Awang has a lot lined up for him outside of track cycling but has made it clear that his main focus is on the 2024 Paris Games.

Azizulhasni, 33, received the Sports Icon Excellence Award from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) today.

The university also presented him with a post graduate studies scholarship (Doctor of Philosophy), as well as a lecturer position for him to take up when he is ready.

The keirin specialist said he was honoured to receive the award, scholarship and job offer.

"It is a dynamic offer from UPSI which offers me the opportunity to start something new when the time comes for me to hang up my bicycle (retire from competitive cycling)," said Azizulhasni.

"I hope awards such as this will also motivate my fellow athletes out there to work harder and strive for success at the highest level.

"I have, however, informed UPSI that I am not making any concrete decisions on the offers for now as I am fully focusing on Paris 2024 first."

Azizulhasni is the nation's most successful track cyclist having won Olympic bronze in Rio, silver in Tokyo, the World Championships in 2017, as well as 10 Asian Championship gold medals.

The Paris games will likely be Azizulhasni's fifth and final appearance at the Olympiad as he will be 36 by then.
