Riding in France without coach

National coach John Beasley will not be in Roubaix, France, to guide cyclists Shah Firdaus Sahrom and Fadhil Zonis for the World Championships next week.

The Australian will not be travelling to France as he may face problems returning home to Melbourne after the competition.

Beasley is currently observing quarantine in Melbourne after arriving from Malaysia recently.

It is his first trip back to Australia since June.

"Travellers from Europe are not allowed into Australia, and there are no return flights.

"I also cannot return to Kuala Lumpur as my visa is expiring. It will only be renewed with my new contract," said Beasley.

"As I am not going to France, I will have the time to plan out a new national team programme."

Beasley is optimistic that Shah and Fadhil will be able to handle the pressure in Roubaix in his absence.

"My assistant Harnizam Basri and physiologist Chee Lee Ming will be with the cyclists in France.

"Both of them have been with me for many years, and I know they will do their best to help Shah and Fadhil cope," he said.

"I will be in close contact with them, so there are no major issues."

Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Azizulhasni Awang is not competing in France as he is taking a short break to be with his family.

Shah, who reached the keirin quarter-finals at the Tokyo Olympics, will be making his third appearance in the world meet. He will compete in the individual sprint and keirin.

As for Fadhil, he will compete in the 1km time trial, individual sprint and keirin.
