Nurul Izzah produces promising show at worlds

KUALA LUMPUR: Rising star Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri dipped under the 35-second mark for the second time this year in the women's 500m time trial at the World Championships in Glasgow on Friday.

The 20-year-old clocked 34.879s in the qualifying round to finish 19th out of 26 cyclists at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.

However, it was not enough to advance to the final.

Germany's Emma Hinze led with the fastest time of 32.850s in the qualifying round, underlining her credentials as a favourite in the event. She was part of the German team who won gold in the team sprint on Thursday.

Kedahan Nurul Izzah clocked 34.226s to win the 500m time trial silver at the Asian Championships in Nilai in June.

All eyes will be on Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Azizulhasni Awang and Shah Firdaus Sahrom in the men's sprint on Saturday.
