Azizulhasni believes he is riding on strong

KUALA LUMPUR: Olympic-bound cyclist Azizulhasni Awang said his heart is getting much stronger.

In April 2022, Azizul underwent open heart surgery after being diagnosed with a rare condition known as anomalous origin of the right coronary artery from the aorta (AAORCA) at Epworth Richmond Hospital, Melbourne.

Two years later, Azizul faced another setback after being diagnosed with Pericarditis - swelling and inflammation of the lining surrounding his heart.

However, the indomitable 36-year-old still managed to win the keirin gold in the Nations Cup in Adelaide, Australia, in January.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics silver medallist said his health is now better than before.

"After consultations with several heart specialists in Melbourne and at the National Heart Institute (IJN) and undergoing several tests, my health condition is improving," said Azizul.

"I'm still under observation and constantly in touch with doctors at the IJN."

The former world keirin champion said his health issue was one of the challenges he faced in his preparations for the Paris Olympics.

"It becomes tougher and more challenging in each edition of the Olympics," said the Pocket Rocketman who has competed in four Olympics.

"I hope this is a test from Allah before being rewarded with great success and before I retire due to this health issue.

"I'm always optimistic to face this Olympics. This is my final outing and I will definitely give my all."
