Kevin-Prince Boateng makes Eintracht debut

BERLIN: Ghana midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng made his first appearance for Eintracht Frankfurt at Freiburg on Sunday – back in the Bundesliga two years after being thrown out of the Schalke squad.

The 30-year-old only signed a three-year deal with Frankfurt on Friday after a hasty exit from Spanish club Las Palmas, who the Ghana international left after citing ‘personal reasons’.

Despite just one training session with his new team-mates, the attacking midfielder came on for the final 25 minutes of the goalless draw, set up a few attacks and had a couple of chances.

Freiburg had the ball in the net in the first-half, but the video assistant referee ruled out Tim Kleindienst’s effort after spotting a team-mate was offside when the goal was scored.

The VAR is being trialled for the first time in the German league this season.

The system made its debut on Friday in awarding a penalty to Bayern Munich which Robert Lewandowski converted in the defending champions’ 3-1 win over Leverkusen in the opening match.

Boateng, the half-brother of Bayern’s Germany international Jerome Boateng, last played in the Bundesliga in May 2015.

His previous German club Schalke suspended him, along with Germany international Sidney Sam, for the final two games of the 2014/15 season when his attitude was questioned by then-director of sport Holger Heldt.

Boateng made 28 apperances for Las Palmas last season and found new employment quickly after abruptly quitting the Spanish side last Wednesday to be closer to his family, who live in Milan.

Later on Sunday, Borussia Moenchengladbach play Cologne in the Rhineland derby.--AFP
