Forward Safawi to Malaysians: I'm sorry

KUALA LUMPUR: Safawi Rasid has apologised to Malaysians for the national football team's failure to win the 'mother of all gold' at the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games (KL2017).

An own goal by goalkeeper Haziq Nadzli in the final saw Thailand securing a 1-0 at the Shah Alam Stadium last night.

"I am disappointed that I could not help the team win the gold at KL2017," said Safawi.

"I apologise to all the Malaysian supporters who have been with us from start to finish."

Captain Adib Zainudin, however, stressed that it was not the end of the road for the team.

"We had given our best throughout the whole tournament but we have to accept this defeat," said Adib.

"Obviously we wanted the gold but we have to keep moving forward and work towards achieving more."

Malaysia had lost to Thailand by the same scoreline in the 2001 Sea Games final.
