KUALA LUMPUR: The national five-a-side football team kept their hopes of defending their title at the Kuala Lumpur Asean Para Games (Para KL2017) alive after downing Vietnam 3-0 today.
Goals from Ahmad Fikri Omar in the eighth minute and a brace from captain Amirul Arif Mahadhir in the 21st and 29th secured a straightforward victory for Malaysia at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
The win saw S. Sunny's charges moving up a spot to second in the competition despite being tied on three points with Vietnam, thanks to a superior goal difference.
The national team now has no choice but to beat Laos in tomorrow to secure a place in the final against Thailand, whose position is secure atop the standings.
Thailand, who beat Malaysia yesterday, thumped Laos 4-1 to maintain their 100 per cent record. Malaysia defeated Thailand in the 2015 decider.
