England capable of finishing 2nd in Group G, says Campbell

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Arsenal centre-back Sol Campbell believes England will easily go beyond the group stage in next year’s World Cup in Russia.

Campbell said England should be capable of finishing second in Group G, also comprising Belgium, Panama and Tunisia.

"Belgium will be the toughest team to beat as they have quality players,” said Campbell, capped 73 times by England between 1996-2007.

"Panama have a few players who can give England problems. Overall, they should be able to beat both Panama and Tunisia.

"This should be enough to secure second place in the group. With the quality they (England) have now, they should be targeting at least the quarterfinals."

Campbell attended a meet-and-greet session with Arsenal fans at Subang Jaya City Centre (SJCC) today. Over 100 Arsenal supporters turned up for the event.

When asked about Arsenal's 3-1 defeat to Manchester United in Saturday’s English Premier League match, Campbell attributed Jose Mourinho’s side win to their goalkeeper David de Gea.

"There was only one thing that stopped Arsenal from winning the match yesterday and that was De Gea.

"You saw for yourself how many saves he made. Arsenal should have led 4-2 in the first half, but De Gea made all the difference,” he added.
