Bobby returns to add firepower to Sarawak

KUALA LUMPUR: Bobby Gonzales returns to Sarawak for a third stint hoping to replicate the success he achieved twice previously in firing the team to the Super League.

Former national striker Bobby scored 15 and 20 goals in 2011 and 2013 respectively as Sarawak clinched promotion each time.

After turning out for PKNS last season, Bobby returns to a side which finished bottom of the Super League last year as one of nine additions to coach Ian Gillan's team.

Bobby, 33, joins winger Benedict Martin and goalkeeper Iqbal Suhaimi in returning to Sarawak while other newcomers include Serbian midfielder Nebojsa Marinkovic from FK Rad Belgrade, Sabre Mat Abu and naturalised player Shazalee Ramlee.

The Sarawak team arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Friday and defeated fellow Premier League side MISC-MIFA 2-1 in Bukit Jelutong on Saturday with Hairul Mokhtar getting both the visitors' goals.

Sarawak coach Gillan said the team are slowly building momentum to the start of the season, which they kick off against Kuantan in Kuching on Feb 2.

"We gave everyone 45 minutes today (Saturday) and it was a good, competitive game," said the Australian of the win over MISC-MIFA.

"Hairol scored two good goals from Nebo's corner and free kick and if we are honest, he could have scored five. Great exercises and more hard work is needed to improve the squad."

Sarawak continue their pre-season tour with a game against Universiti Teknologi Mara at the UiTM Stadium in Shah Alam on Monday before facing Felda United on Wednesday at the BSN Training Complex in Bangi.
