Korean coach Bong Gil fears Malaysia

KUNSHAN: South Korea coach Kim Bong Gil has instructed his players to go all out against Malaysia in Saturday’s AFC Under-23 Championship quarter-final match at Kunshan Stadium.

On paper, Korea should have no issues against their Southeast Asian opponents.

However, Bong Gil is wary having watched what Ong Kim Swee’s side are capable of when they upset Saudi Arabia 1-0 in the group stage.

"We had a tough group game in the 3-2 win over Australia, but I believe my players will be ready to face Malaysia. I am, however, confident we can beat them,” said Bong Gil in Friday’s pre-match press conference.

"Frankly, we did not expect Malaysia to beat Saudi Arabia. I watched the game. Malaysia are strong in attack and defence."

South Korea lived up to expectations by topping Group D with wins over Australia (3-2) and Vietnam (2-1), and a draw with Jordan (1-1).

Despite being favourites, Bong Gil does not feel that his charges are under any pressure.

"Malaysia had an additional rest day, but our players have strong fighting spirit to counter them.

“My team rested yesterday and I hope they have recovered.

"I do not know the result of the game, we will take it one half at a time and try to score,” he added.
