Fernandes heaps praise on Under-23

KUALA LUMPUR: The national Under-23 team’s exploits at the AFC Under-23 Championship in Kunshan, China has caught the attention of AirAsia Berhad’s group chief executive officer, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.

Through a post put up on his personal Twitter account, Fernandes was clearly excited with the spirited performance of Ong Kim Swee’s boys in their quarter-final clash against mighty South Korea.

He lauded the national squad on their exemplary performance even though they went down 2-1 at the hands of the 2016 runners-up.

“It’s been a longtime since we were able to give such a close, tough fight against the South Koreans.

“Congratulations to all those involved especially coach Ong Kim Swee. One tough loss but the Harimau Muda squad should be very proud with what they’ve achieved.

“Be proud as the first Southeast Asian team to march through to the quarter-finals of the championship,” said the owner of English football club Queens Park Rangers (QPR), yesterday.
