United to bury Liverpool, predict legends

KUALA LUMPUR: Whether Jose Mourinho parks the bus or not, Manchester United will take a massive step towards qualifying for next season's Champions League with a win over bitter rivals Liverpool in tomorrow’s English Premier League match at Old Trafford.

A trio of United legends were unanimous in their belief that Mourinho's side will nullify the attacking threat of Liverpool, led by top-scorer Mohamed Salah, and end a run of four successive draws against Jurgen Klopp's team.

Dwight Yorke believes a United win will go a long way to ensuring they finish the season second, with runaway leaders Manchester City almost certain to be crowned champions.

"It's a massive game for us, we are only two points ahead of Liverpool. If we were to win that puts us five points ahead of them and psychologically that is a massive blow for them," said Yorke who appeared with his former teammates Dennis Irwin and David May at Aladdin Group's offices, United's exclusive global online marketplace partner, in Kuala Lumpur today.

"The onus is on us after two massive results recently against Chelsea and Crystal Palace. The players know what is at stake, we've all been in this position before.

"Every player wants to play in this game and they don’t need to be motivated. It's a huge game for us and it would cement our chances of finishing second. We have to win tomorrow and I do believe we are in a position to do that."

Yorke went against the grain by predicting plenty of goals in the game with United to edge it 3-2 while Irwin and May went for scores of 2-1 and 1-0 respectively in United's favour.

"I think there are goals when you look at both teams with the attractive attacking players on show," said Yorke, whose prediction runs counter to the 0-0 draw played by the two teams at Anfield last October.

Former defender May thinks United are capable of stopping Liverpool's Salah, who has scored 32 goals in all competitions this season.

"I don't think Liverpool will score, as much as Salah has been outstanding this season, and we'll nick it 1-0 and score early," said May, who added that victory could set the stage for United to add the Champions League and FA Cup to their trophy cabinet.

"Winning the Champions League and the FA Cup would be an achievement. We've got a game against Sevilla next week and we're hoping to get to the quarter-finals. We've got Brighton in the FA Cup and I'm sure it will be a breeze as well."
