Omujuwa: High fees not an excuse for intermediaries not to obtain a licence

KUALA LUMPUR: Player agent Michael Omujuwa considers the high registration fees imposed by the FA of Malaysia (FAM) should not be an excuse for any intermediary not to obtain a legal licence from the governing body.

The Nigerian, the only foreign agent to register with FAM since the intermediary system was introduced in the country on March 7 last year, said all agents have to comply with the rules.

"I have no problem with the registration process because it can be done online. I follow all the rules set by FAM because I have been an agent here since 2015.

"The registration fee by FAM is high compared to other countries, but I believe the agents, especially foreign agents, can still make a profit even by bringing in just one player," he said.

NSTP Sports recently reported on the proliferation of unlicensed agents in Malaysia with FAM revealing only four agents, including one foreigner, had registered with them.

However, some foreign agents claim the annual fee of RM47,700 charged by FAM is too high while for local agents, the fee is only RM10,600.

Omujuwa, who brought in four import players and a coach for several Super League teams this season, believes that registration with FAM will ease the transfer of players while acting as precautionary step in the event of a contract problem between a player and his team.

"I just registered at FAM because in Nigeria I was exempted from registering for having a football academy involving 40 players. I cannot reveal how much an agent is paid because it depends on the negotiations with teams and players.

"As an agent working here, I have to adhere to the rules and take care of the interests of the players. I am sure if there is any problem, FAM can help and I have nothing to fear because I've registered," he said.
