AFC warn action can be taken on both teams

KUALA LUMPUR: The brawl between Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates in Friday’s Under-23 friendly could see players and officials from both teams getting punished for their unprofessional conduct.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) confirmed yesterday that they could suspend those involved in the free-for-all and this could affect Ong Kim Swee’s plans for the upcoming Indonesia Asian Games.

“We are still waiting for the full report of the incident from the FA of Malaysia (FAM). I do not want to speculate about it without studying the report. We do not have to wait for the Asian Games to finish in order to punish those involved in the incident,” said AFC general-secretary Datuk Windsor Paul.

“We can impose action on them immediately. However, no action will be taken on the concerned teams as the incident only involved some players and officials.”

Windsor, however, is upset with some of the team officials who joined in the brawl.

“The friendly was probably important for both teams as it was the final game before the Asian Games. But things turned ugly when officials and players on the bench got involved. This should not have happened,” he added.
