FAM sets 2030 target to be among Asia's best

KUALA LUMPUR: The FA of Malaysia (FAM) has come up with a longterm plan for success. The country’s football governing body hopes to elevate the national squad to be among the top five national teams in Asia by the year 2030, and they’ve got a roadmap for it which was launched here yesterday.

The roadmap is for a 12-year period and aptly named F:30, whereby it is divided into three strategic plans, with the first phase (2019-2022) earmarked to lay out a solid and strong groundwork for management, competitions, human capital development and infrastructure, followed by phase two (2023-2026) which is to reach Asian level of competition.

Phase three (2027-2030) is aimed at putting together a world-class national team that is able to compete with the very best.

The F:30 programme was jointly officiated by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president Shaikh Salman Ebrahim Al Khalifa, and FAM president Datuk Seri Hamidin Mohd Amin here yesterday.

Also present were FIFA executive committee member Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, FIFA secretary-general Fatma Samoura, and AFC secretary-general, Datuk Windsor Paul John along with FAM’s executive committee members and affiliates’ representatives.

Hamidin said that the roadmap is a national agenda and needs the involvement, understanding and cooperation from all those involved in order to realise the objectives set.

In fact, Hamidin sees the F:30 programme as a symbol of FAM’s determination to implement a wholesome and all-encompassing development plan for each and everl level in order to return Malaysia to its glory days of being a respected footballing powerhouse.

“The 12-year period is a realistic goal after taking into account the present conditions of the local football ecosystem.

“The core of this roadmap is to strengthen affiliates especially in terms of human capital development and competitions, the introduction and inculcation of the Malaysian footballing DNA through a uniformed coaching curriculum, as well as effective development that yields welcome results at grassroots level.

“Also contained in the roadmap are FAM’s plans to produce a group of top notch professional referees with the aim of improving on the quality of refereeing in the country,” stressed Hamidin.
