Malaysia steam past Maldives for confidence-boosting win

BUKIT JALIL: Malaysia recorded an impressive 3-0 win over Maldives in their final warm up match ahead of the AFF Cup at the National Stadium here on Saturday.

Captain Zaquan Adha Radzak handed Malaysia the lead by netting his fifth international goal of the season by converting a Norshahrul Idlan Talaha’s pass after 17 minutes.

Tan Cheng Hoe’s men dominated 90 per cent of possession after the lead but they could not turn their chances into goals before the halt-time whistle.

After the breather, Malaysia continued to dominate and after coming close on several occasions netted a second through substitute Safawi Rasid in the 81st minute, also assisted by Norshahrul.

Gambian-born Mohamadou Sumareh scored his third international goal on his third cap with a fine finish in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

It was Malaysia’s fifth win in nine matches this year.

Cheng Hoe’s side will open their AFF Cup Group A campaign against Cambodia at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh on Thursday.
