Selangor slap heavy transfer fees on their stars

KUALA LUMPUR: The FA of Selangor (FAS) have tied up their players with release clauses valued between RM3 million and RM6 million for the new M-League season to discourage other teams from tapping up their stars.

Right-back Syahmi Safari, who helped Malaysia reach the final of last year’s AFF Cup, is the most valuable player in the Red Giants with a release clause of RM6 million.

“We used a template introduced by the FA of Malaysia (FAM) in 2017 to tie up our players with strong contracts. All of them have release clauses,” said FAS secretary Dr Johan Kamal Hamidon yesterday.

“Syahmi is our most valuable player and his release clause is RM6 million.

“The new contracts not only protect our players, but also the club, who will not lose out after spending a lot on developing them.”

The FA of Selangor have acted fast to stop their players from being lured by other states following the controversial move of Kedah’s Akhyar Rashid to Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT).

Selangor’s transfer fees action is a good example for all M-League teams.

“I heard Kedah are still using FAM’s old template as a guide to sign players. I hope other teams will adopt the new template which has a release clause,” said Johan.

Akhyar, 19, signed a four-year contract with JDT with a RM12 million release clause recently.

Kedah are now raising funds to take JDT to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for tapping up Akhyar when he was still contracted with them.
