US-based Wan Kuzri in Maloney's training squad

KUALA LUMPUR: US-based Wan Kuzri Wan Kamal is one of 35 trainees called up for centralised training by national Under-19 coach Brad Maloney.

The trainees, who are preparing for the AFC Under-19 Championship in Uzbekistan on Oct 14-31, will report at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya on Monday.

Kuzri is the younger brother of Sporting Kansas City's Wan Kuzain, who was part of last year's Philippines Sea Games training squad.

Adam Nadzmi Zamri, a former National Football Development Programme (NFDP) captain, who had trained at Brazil's BISP Cruzeiro Football Academy in the past, is one of the many new faces.

Fourteen of the 35 trainees on the list have helped Malaysia qualify for the AFC Under-19 Championship.

"The first phase of training will offer an opportunity for some new faces to make an impression," said Maloney.

"It is important to provide as many young players the platform to shine at international level."

Among the big names left out of the first phase of training are Firdaus Irman Fadhil, Sikh Izhan Nazrel Sikh Azman, Azrin Afiq Rusmini, Harith Haiqal Adam Afkar, Mukhairi Ajmal Mahadi, Luqman Hakim Shamsudin and Ahmad Zikri Khalili.

However, these players, who had proven their quality in the past, are still part of Maloney's plans for the AFC Under-19 Championship.

Malaysia are in Group D with Tajikistan, Qatar and Yemen.
