Spaniard Garrido to take charge of Malaysia's Under-23 team

THE FA of Malaysia (FAM) today appointed Spaniard Juan Torres Garrido as the new national Under-23 coach.

Torres, 43, will fill the vacant seat left by E. Elavarasan who resigned abruptly as national Under-23 coach on Sept 18. The Spaniard was previously Elavarasan's assistant.

Torres worked as Barcelona's talent scout chief from 2016-2020 before becoming the Professional Youth Football head for Granada FC in 2021-2022.

Garrido is tasked with preparing Malaysia for the Under-23 Asian Cup in Doha in April 2024, which also serves as a qualifier for the Paris Olympics.

It would take a lot for Malaysia to get an Olympic ticket, but Torres sees this as a challenge.

"I'm honoured and excited for this opportunity. I've been here for about a year," he said.

Torres, 43, will be assisted by former Harimau Malaya captain Shukor Adan.
