Pan Gon: Forget about World Cup if we can't beat Taiwan

KUALA LUMPUR: Ahead of tomorrow's crucial World Cup/Asian Cup qualifier against Taiwan, national coach Kim Pan Gon revealed that Harimau Malaya are motivated to break new ground and make a significant impact in the competition.

Pan Gon's ultimate goal is to guide his talented team towards a strong performance, with aspirations of securing a spot in their first-ever World Cup in 2026.

World No. 137 Malaysia will face Taiwan in their second Group D qualifier at the Municipal Stadium — a venue where Harimau Malaya had suffered defeats in the previous two encounters against Taiwan.

It will be the first meeting between the teams since Malaysia's 2-0 loss in a friendly in 2018.

"Taiwan are strong at home, and they are doing between under their new coach, Gary White," said Pan Gon in the pre-match conference in Taipei today.

"We do not deserve to advance to the next stage if we do not overcome this hurdle.

"If we do not get three points from this match, then it will be tough. My players are highly motivated for this game," said Pan Gon.

Pan Gon does not want to touch on Malaysia's past away records against world No. 152 Taiwan.

"History is history. We have a new team and a new game.

"We have a dream to advance to the final stage of the World Cup qualifiers. To get there, we must fight tomorrow for the points. We will not back down," said Pan Gon.

Pan Gon characterised Taiwan as disciplined, hardworking, and possessing athletic ability in both built and endurance.

Meanwhile, captain Dion Cools said he and his teammates are focused on their mission, ignoring external pressures, and are prepared to face whatever challenges from Taiwan.

The group champions and runners-up will secure a place in the third round of the World Cup qualifiers and qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup.

Teams finishing third and fourth will advance to the qualifying stage for the Asian Cup.
