Legend Amri hangs up his boots

KOTA KINABALU: Veteran Amri Yahyah announced his retirement from football on Sunday after helping Sabah finish third in the Super League.

The forward hung up his boots following a career, in which he helped Selangor and Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) win a treble each in 2009 and 2016.

Amri was also part of the JDT squad that won the 2015 AFC Cup.

He also had stints with Melaka United and Sarawak United.

A regular with Harimau Malaya, Amri sparked excitement in 2009 when he scored two goals for Malaysia in the 3-2 defeat to former Premier League champions Manchester United.

The 42-year-old has not ruled out the possibility of returning to Sabah if offered a coaching role.

He was met after the Super League match between Sabah and Kedah, which the former won 2-0, at the Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu.

On a lighter note, he said he would definitely come back to Sabah as a tourist.

"I will return as a tourist in Sabah. But for a management role, I haven't thought about it yet, but if there is an offer, I will consider it," he said.

Amri has not decided on his career direction after retirement but hopes that the journey after this will be exciting.

He also thanked Sabah fans for supporting him throughout his tenure with Sabah since 2021 after the match against Kedah.

"Thousands and millions of thanks to the supporters who came tonight (Sunday).

"There is no direction yet, but I am planning," he said.
