Ex-Korea captain Ja Cheol welcomes Harimau to Asian Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: Former South Korea captain Koo Ja Cheol said he is glad to see Malaysia qualifying for the Asian Cup in Doha on Jan 12-Feb 10.

The continental showpiece has been expanded from 16 to 24 teams after 2019 to allow more nations to participate. Malaysia are making a return after 42 years.

Ja Cheol said the addition of eight teams will add value to the quadrennial Asian Cup.

"I think expanding the Asian Cup to 24 teams has made the competition extremely exciting. It has allowed us to see competition between diverse countries across Asia," said Koo, in an interview with the-afc.com.

"Honestly, all the groups look very interesting and several teams are making comebacks after being away for some time. I am keen to see how the action unfolds in Group E since it hosts South Korea."

World No. l30 Malaysia will play No. 87 Jordan on Jan 15, No. 86 Bahrain on Jan 20 and No. 23 South Korea on Jan 25 in Group E.

"Moreover, I am pleased to see teams such as Malaysia and Hong Kong back in the game as they're famous for being home to some of the most ardent fans of the beautiful game," added Ja Cheol.

Ja Cheol, whose five goals earned him the Golden Boot at the 2011 edition in Qatar, said he hopes South Korea will emerge champions in Doha because it is long overdue. The Taegeuk Warriors last won the Asian crown in 1960.

"During my time, our aim was to win the trophy, but we haven't been able to meet that goal.

"South Korea have always given excellent performances at the Asian Cup, but we have been shy of the title for a long time now. So, I'm very hopeful that the boys will bring home the prize this time."

Former FC Augsburg midfielder Ja Cheol is impressed by Jurgen Klinsmann's team, and said it's their best shot at the title, especially with Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung Min leading the charge.

"We have an exemplary leader in Sonny (Son) and I want to see him take the trophy. He is a legend among legends in South Korea, and he brings genuine joy to our people.

"Look at the others around him that he can rely on. Kim Min Jae is doing well in Bayern Munich.

"I also enjoy watching Lee Jae Sun (Mainz) and people in the country love Lee Kang In. So, you can see that there are so many world-class players in the team."
