Son's father fears for South Korea

KUALA LUMPUR: The son is expected to lead the country to glory, but the father thinks that is not going to happen.

Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung Min carries the hopes of South Korea at the Asian Cup which starts today in Doha. Qatar.

But his father, Woong Jung, feels that South Korea are not strong enough to capture the prestigious title at Asia's quadrennial showpiece.

Woong Jung told the South Korean media that their main rivals, the Samurai Blue, are a cut above the Taegeuk Warriors.

"The reality is that Korea are behind Japan in all aspects. Korea will not win this competition," he said.

"We must look back and ask why we failed to emerge as (Asian Cup) champions in the last 64 years.

"You must be wondering why I said this even though my son is the national team captain. Of course I hope for them to win. But I'm worried South Korean football is in decline," said Woong Jung.

South Korea are drawn in Group E with Malaysia, Bahrain and Jordan.
